EHS girls hoop team seeks to build on winning season

The Everett High girls basketball team will be looking to build on its fine performance of last season as Coach Tammy Tuner and her crew open their 2010-2011 campaign this week.

The Lady Crimson Tide hosted Waltham last night (Tuesday) in their season opener as this newspaper was going to press and will travel to Marblehead for a Sunday afternoon encounter at 3:30. They will be back home next Wednesday against Whittier Tech.

“We’re hoping for another good year,” said Turner, whose team finished 11-9 last season and became the first EHS girls squad to qualify for the state tournament in seven years (and for only the second time in 17 years).

Leading the Lady Crimson Tide will be a trio of captains, senior forward Rachel Pierce and junior backcourt mates Tori Cyrus and Taylor Sweeney. Junior Amanda DeSouza, an outstanding member of the EHS volleyball team, will play in the five role underneath and senior Jackie Hanlon will fill the other spot in the front court.

Lexi Sowards and Spresa Ramadani figure to see plenty of action in the backcourt.

Everett scrimmaged Melrose and Winthrop in the pre season to give Turner a good look at all of her charges. “We’re very aggressive and that’s good to see,” said Turner. “If the girls give it all they’ve got every minute they’re out on the floor, we should be in every game we play.”

Turner said that Cambridge and Somerville figure to be the top rivals in the Greater Boston League this season.
