The second debate between candidates running to fill the empty seat left by Senator Anthony Galluccio’s resignation was held in Cambridge at the Senior Center last week.
Like the forum held in Chelsea two weeks ago, it was well attended with all the candidates addressing the crowd with their platforms and future plans for the sprawling senatorial district they are seeking to represent.
Once again, the primary players in the forum were Attorney Tim Flaherty and Everett Councilor Sal DiDomenico.
Chelsea native Michael Albano continued his ascent to contender status with a performance that matched his best effort in Chelsea two weeks ago.
A full reading of the Cambridge Chronicle’s comment section following the event revealed a wide variety of comments.
“Tim Flaherty sounded the strongest,” wrote one reader.
“”The biggest part of the district is in Everett and city Councilor Sal DiDomenico has a lead there … Galluccio with Sal D did a lot of door to door to get his name known,” wrote another reader.
“Did any Cambridge Democrat talk about smaller government, less taxes and personal responsibility?” wondered another reader.
“Not only is Dennis Benzan the best person for the job, he’s the right person for the job,” wrote yet another reader.
“It is not the strongest crop of candidates I’ve ever seen, but I thank them all for running. Tim Flaherty made the best overall impression at the forum,” another reader wrote.
The campaign is revving up and winding down at the same time.
There are slightly more than three weeks remaining for the senatorial hopefuls running in this special election.
Some polling results that we have received at the Independent reveal a close contest between Flaherty and DiDomenico.
DiDomenico apparently is leading Flaherty in Everett while Flaherty is ahead of DiDomenico in Cambridge, Allston-Brighton, Chelsea and Charlestown.
The Everett vote could be the pillar upon which this election outcome rests.
If DiDomenico can control 70% of the Everett vote, which his handlers are seeking to do, then DiDomenico can lose in most of the other communities by close margins and still come away with a victory.
If Everett’s turnout for DiDomenico totals only 50% or 55%, then Flaherty’s pluralities in Chelsea, Charlestown, Cambridge and Allston-Brighton could mean a victory for him.
In a sad story, candidate Michael Albano’s brother died in a tragic skiing accident last Friday and Albano has stopped campaigning until his brother’s funeral arrangements have been met.

1 2 Next »I really think that Dennis Benzan has a very very good shot. He has a long history of working on the district on issues that are very close to the folks who live here, and his life story is very compelling. He is running a strong grassroots campaign and I personally feel inspired by him. After all I've seen and read, its clear to me that I will be voting for Dennis Benzan.

I'm sorry but living in Everett, I cannot vote for someone who allows our superintendent spend money and use workers on his own house. The city councilors should have done something about this and they have not. Councilor Sal DiDomenico looked the other way and lets this happen, so I can't vote for him for Senate. What will he look the other way for if he's elected to this position. I think I will be voting for Flaherty, he seems to talk the best to the citizens and our values.
By the way if you LIVE in Everett you would know that the councilors could not do anything about Freddy. Only the school committee has the power to take action. Sal never looked the other way. As a matter of fact I believe that he voted to fire Freddy..check it out for yourself!
Flaherty is a good talker but as they say talk is cheap. Sal is in a position where he has made good and honest decisions for the families of Everett. Maybe some of these lawyers should try local politics and not try to climb the political ladder without ever of had getting their feet wet!
Sorry Pasta, but you are wrong, I did go back and check and Sal did not vote to remove Freddy as you call him. And he has done nothing to remove him either. If you think that is a 'Good Decision' for Everett families, I don't think you understand that was Everett money and property stolen from our wallets. If you pay taxes in Everett and still support these people who still turn the other way then maybe you are the problem. And by your post, I understand you a Sal supporter, but come on don't be bias, the facts are the facts. I just said I will be voting for Tim Flaherty he seems to be the best candidate. My opinion.
Flaherty......Are you kidding? Electing this guy would be like the fox guarding the hen house. His father, disgraced House Speaker "Good Time" Charlie Flaherty has been a registered lobbyist on Beacon Hill since he was tossed out for ethics violations. Do we really trust that he is the one who will end corruption on Beacon Hill. PLEASE! Just what we need , another defense attorney who makes his money defending drug dealers and violent offenders responsible for making our laws. Wake up people!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry but I could never vote for someone who puts drug dealers back on the streets. Tim Flaherty defends drug dealers, gets them no jail time and then runs on the political platform that there is a drug epidemic and he wants to stop it. I have children I don't want this man even remotely in charge of their future.

And for the record, Tim Flaherty was both a procesutor and defense attorney....why don't you mention he work as an Assistant District Attorney. I have listened to the debate and have done some looking into the candidate in the race, I wish you would do the same. Some of whom not only don't live in our city, they don't even live in the district. I do have an informed opinion and will be voting for Tim Flaherty for Everett.
